2009 Hawaii Bowl:
SMU vs. Nevada

Hawaii Bowl is a young post-season college football game established only in 2002. Played on the eve or during Christmas Day, this annual football match between the WAC team and a bowl-eligible team from either Pac-10 or Conference USA, is held at the Aloha Stadium, a landmark of Hawaii’s beautiful Oahu Island.

It is owned and operated by the ESPN Regional Television. It was ConAgra Foods that sponsored the Hawaii Bowl on its first year. When Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Hawaii became the main sponsor on its second year, it became the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

Two college football bowls existed in Hawaii before, the Aloha Bowl (1982-2000) and the Oahu Bowl (1998-2000). However, these transferred to the US mainland, Aloha in San Francisco and Oahu in Seattle. Both leagues lost NCAA certifications, Aloha in 2000 and Oahu in 2002.

When the Hawaii Bowl came into existence, the University of Hawaii requested a privilege to have a guarantee to play in the bowl regardless of its standing the WAC, for as long as it is eligible to play in a bowl as per BCS standard. Either Pac-10 or Conference USA can vie for the place to be matched with a WAC squad for this bowl’s match. In 2007, it was C-USA who fielded a team. In 2008 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl slated on December 24, 2008, the Pac-10 squad will face a team from WAC.
